Safe Havens for Babies
Sunday July 17, 2005
For some time, I was worried about the various "Safe Haven" laws going into effect. The idea seemed like a good one. One that would alleviate the stress and fear in new mothers in desperate circumstances and protect their babies from harm. But even after the laws were enacted, babies were still being abandoned in dumpsters, on the sides of roads and in toilets. I feared that the laws weren't working and I didn't understand why. I'm feeling quite a lot better today reading these two stories, however:
Hospital used as haven for newborn
Police won't look for woman who abandoned newborn girl
Hospital used as haven for newborn

Granted, in the second case, I wish the mother had checked the baby in to the hospital. Living in Texas, I know how quickly the heat can get to even an adult. It's still a step forward in my eyes.
