Babies "Unlearn" Complex Rhythm

Monday August 15, 2005
I was reading an article on National Geographic's site about a study done on babies and rhythm. It said: "The findings suggest that the ability to discern irregular rhythms could be 'unlearned' in cultures that emphasize more simple musical structures."

I found this interesting because in a child development class I took, I learned that you should never let babies listen to jazz or ragtime because of the syncopated rhythm. The teacher said that these poor jazz-exposed infants would grow up without any sense of rhythm and it would impair their musical and mathematical abilities when they were older. At the time, I thought it was a bunch of malarkey but I was but a wee sophomore in high school and I lacked the resources (and the gumption) to rebut my teacher.

At any rate, the study is in its early stages, but what it's saying to me is, "Expose your babies to a wide variety of music, including non-Western music, so that they won't lose the full sense of rhythm that they have when they're born." There's more to the world of music than "Three Blind Mice" and "Rock-a-Bye Baby."
