Verywell Family / Amelia Manley Ride-on toys are a great way for kids to engage in play and develop gross and fine motor skills like balance and coordination. They range from bikes, scooters, cars, and more for kids of all ages. The best ride-on toys match a child’s developmental needs and are durable and easy to use. To select the best ride-on toys for toddlers, babies, and kids of all ages, we surveyed 875 parents to find out what toys their children play with, how they play with them, and why they love them. Moreover, we spoke with two toy experts and reviewed guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on toy buying safety and tips for buying toys for babies and toddlers. We carefully considered age recommendations, toy safety, product weight, design, weight capacity, ease of use, and value when reviewing products. This fast ride-on toy was the 2021 Outdoor Toy of the Year, and Radio Flyer’s latest Extreme Drift version of the go-kart won the 2023 Ride-On Toy of the Year. One of our writers received a free sample of the Ultimate Electric Go-Kart from the brand and it’s been a hit with her almost 4-year-old son. To say the go-kart satisfies his need for speed would be an understatement. The go-kart features a single-speed reverse and three forward-driving speeds: 2.5, 5, and 8 mph (the Extreme Drift goes up to 11 mph). A screw on the gear shift doubles as a parent-controlled speed lock, which keeps kids in first gear or first and second gear only, or parents fully remove the screw for all speeds. Kids can only drift in third gear (or show off their donut skills), thanks to the slick rear wheels. The front wheels feature a strip of rubber to provide traction while kids recreate their own Fast and the Furious scene. While the go-kart requires assembly, the company provides detailed instructions, and it wasn’t difficult. We love the tool-free adjustable seat and seat belt so kids can grow with this go-kart over the years and stay safe for every ride. Parents and caregivers will love the rechargeable battery that provides kids with approximately 45 minutes of nonstop fun (depending on the child’s weight, type of terrain, and gear speed). A flag pole sticks into the back of the go-kart for easier visibility, but kids will think it’s the cherry on top of their brand-new racecar. Moreover, parents love that scooters provide physical exercise and don't require any batteries. This Razor A Kick Scooter is made of high-quality aluminum and urethane wheels, so it's lightweight but durable enough to withstand the outdoors and rough handling over the years. On the personalization side, it comes in various colors, so you can choose a color tailored to your child's preferences. It also has adjustable handlebars, so it can be adjusted to your child's height and grow with them as they grow. We love that it has an easy folding mechanism, making it easy to transport or store the scooter when needed. Plus, they teach littles the alphabet, introduce colors, and help kids count from one to 10. The squishy seat of this push ride-on toy allows kids to bounce (or gallop, in this case) to their heart’s content. On the front of the pony are a few interactive toys that promote fine motor skills. The pony’s mane features a rolling toy that lights up and activates the catchy music and phrases. A handle on the back of the pony provides a secure place for babies and toddlers to grab and master their balance. The best part? The handle folds underneath your kiddo’s new friend for storage. The brand sent one of our writers a free sample of this Busy Buggy (in pink, specifically), and our writer says it’s even cuter in person. To develop fine motor skills, there are 17 interactive activities around the car, like a clicking spare tire, interlocking gears, sliding beads, and more. The handlebar easily pops into the car’s frame and supports wobbly legs trying to find their footing. One of our favorite parts of the Busy Buggy is the seat, which doubles as a storage space for goodies. We also reviewed guidance from the AAP on toy buying tips for young children and overall toy buying safety. Parent Survey: We surveyed 875 parents to learn more about what toys their children play with, how they play with the toys, and why they love them. We also wanted to know which brands families consistently buy from and what brings them back year after year. Design and Features Research: After reviewing guidance and insights from our experts, the AAP, and parents, we studied the design and features of more than 30 ride-on toys on the market. Safety and Convenience Assessment: We considered toy safety, age recommendations, ease of use, product weight, weight capacity, and value when reviewing products. What to Look for in a Ride-On Toy Styles and Developmental Needs: Ride-on toys can be age-appropriate for any age and stage. Most ride-on toys fall into four categories: push toys (parents push), foot to floor (children use their feet), pedal power (pedals to propel forward), and motorized (electric or remote control). Consider your child's age, the manufacturer's age recommendation, and your child's overall stage of development to ensure they're learning and riding at an appropriate pace. Goldman says the manufacturer's age recommendation is safety guidance based on the developmental abilities of children at that particular age combined with the specific features of the toy. If a toddler uses a ride-on toy meant for older kids, they risk feeling frustrated or discouraged, and most importantly, they risk getting hurt, she adds.Indoors vs. Outdoors: Some toys, especially those made for younger kids, are best used indoors, while others are only appropriate for the outdoors. A backyard or neighborhood space is vital for an outdoor ride-on toy, while you can work with smaller spaces with indoor ride-on toys. Regardless of where you use the toy, ensure to store it properly, especially if it runs on batteries or is rechargeable, Michalik recommends. Proper toy storage prevents damage and keeps kids from wandering into a potentially dangerous situation, Michalik adds. Longevity: Check the age range, ask friends, and read reviews of the ride-on toy you're considering buying to get a better idea if your child can use it for al long time. Some are big and expensive, so be sure your kid can use it for a while (or pass it on to a sibling), especially if it’s pricey and takes up a lot of space. Frequently Asked Questions Do kids need ride-on toys for development? While not a necessity, ride-on toys are great for physical development, self-confidence, and independence. Goldman notes the multitude of health benefits including the promotion of motor skills, mobility development, and cardiovascular health. She says, "kids will develop the muscles in their legs, practice their coordination, and strengthen balance. The development of leg strength is important for mobility, including crawling, walking, and improving their running skills." What age is best for ride-on toys? Ride-on toys can be used for a wide variety of ages, as long as they are used correctly. Push toys are appropriate for early walkers, while tweens and teens can use bikes and scooters. Each age and stage has a ride-on toy that your kiddo will likely enjoy. How do you store ride-on toys? Depending on how you use them, ride-on toys can be stored inside or outside. Bigger toys that are used outdoors should probably be stored in an enclosed garage or storage shed to protect them from the elements.Indoor toys are best left indoors, but you may want to put them in a closet when not in use for safety.
