Discharge and the Umbilical Cord

It's normal for there to be a little bit of discharge (or even blood) from the umbilical cord, but if the bleeding is active or the area is weeping with discharge that smells bad or is green or yellow, it can be a sign of an infection. Learn when it's time to call the doctor both before and after the stump falls off.
