I can understand trying to lower the mattress and take out bumpers as a first step but if those fail why doesn’t the author recommend moving straight to a bed? I think that is probably the safest next step (provided the room is safe- furniture anchored, no cleaning or baby care supplies laying around like baby oil, outlet covers, rolled up plind pulls…). Just my take.

Try making sure they go to bed with socks on. Their feet wont be able to grip the crib and they can’t climp up.
