Make Your Own Peanut Butter

Saturday February 24, 2007
I was grocery shopping today and noticed that the shelves are still rather empty in the peanut butter aisle. If you are one of the not-so-choosy moms pining away for your Great Value or Peter Pan Peanut Butter after the recent recall and you own a blender or a food processor, try making your own. It's an all-natural way to go and if your kitchen is clean you probably don't have to worry about salmonella contamination.

If you don't have the time, one of my family's favorite brands is Smuckers with no salt added or organic Smuckers (although sometimes the organic is a bit pricey for me depending on where I'm shopping that day). Both of those are the closest to what peanut butter tastes like when I make it at home.

The only downside of homemade or natural peanut butters is that they have to be kept in the fridge once made/opened and can get a little hard to spread after that. One of the bonuses, however -- most other types of peanut butter contain partially hydrogenated oils.
