Board Books for Easter

Saturday March 15, 2008
Introduce the concept of Easter in an age-appropriate way with these Easter board book picks from Elizabeth Kennedy, About's Guide to Children's Books.

While you're there, if you're thinking about starting your child's library -- the earlier the better. Here are some more of her top picks to get you started:

And, of course, if you've already got an avid reader on your hands, feel free to leave a comment and let everyone know what books are your child's favorites.

I have a tradition of giving copies of my kids’ favorite books to new moms. Any Dr. Suess Book, Good Night Moon (isn’t that a staple?) and the Hungry Catapillar (or anything Eric Carle for that matter). My youngest is obsessed by all things Catapillar! As Baby gets older, there are so many things that you can ask for them to actively participate in the book… like point to something red, or where are the kittens or how many oranges are on the page?

My favorite part with toddlers (especially with books like Goodnight Moon, where you read it so many times) is when you can read a line of the book but leave off the last word of the sentence. Just pause briefly and let your child fill in the blank. Then leave off the last two words and so on and so forth. Before long, you can ask your child to “read” it to you instead of you reading it to them. It’s great to see them learning like that.
