Delta Recalls More Than 1 Million Cribs After Infant Dies

Delta Enterprises are recalling some of its Drop Side cribs after an 8-month-old died when the drop side disengaged. Two other entrapment incidents have also been reported.

There are two recalls at work here. The first involves 985,000 cribs dating back as far as 1995 and as recently as 2007. In this recall, the problem arises if the safety pegs aren't installed initially or if the crib is taken apart and reassembled without the safety pegs. These pegs are located in the base of each leg. When they are missing, the side can disengage and cause a large enough gap to entrap or suffocate a child.

The second recall involves 600,000 Drop Side cribs and is similar to the first recall except that it involves a spring peg. These cribs were sold from 2000 to 2007 at various retail stores. No cribs that are currently sold at retail stores are involved in this recall but some have been sold at second-hand or consignment stores.

If you are using the crib and the pegs aren't in place, stop using the crib immediately. Find another safe sleeping arrangement for your baby and call Delta at 800-816-5304 or go to their Web site to order the free repair kit. If you are using the crib and the safety pegs are in place, you can keep using it, but should get the repair kit from Delta to make sure the pegs are always put in place (in case you ever take it apart or use it for another child).
