Guys and Dolls

Friday February 13, 2009

When I was a kid, I can remember my male playmates being scolded for playing with dolls. I'd like to say that we've come a long way from those days, but I recently overheard a father at the park telling his son to put his sister's doll down "right now!"

The truth of the matter is, dolls are perfectly acceptable for boys and not only that -- they can teach your boys empathy and help them work through experiences like the birth of a sibling.

If you're a bit hesitant about letting your son play with a doll, learn more about the positive aspects of this type of role playing with this video.

I wouldn’t let my son play with dolls because that is a girl’s toy. It has been for years. I understand that it could teach your son empathy, but if your son has a positive male influence in his life he could learn from him not a doll. And if their is no male influence then the son’s mother can teach him. Let’s keep boys with cars and trucks and action figures and let the girls keep the dolls and barbies.

I think kids should be able to play with whatever age approprite toys are out there and not worry about the toy being for “boys” or “girls.” That way there will be just one less thing out there that limits kids into “male only” or “female only” professions. My nephew played with dolls (oops, action figures) and is a well adjusted teacher and both my girls played with girl and boy toys, one is an engineer and the other is a commercial artist (who is married to a nurse). There are too many things out there to worry about, the toys they play with should not be a problem. I would hate to think that they could have been potentially maladjusted adults because the adults in their lives didn’t let them follow their interests in their play.
