Is My Baby Ready for a Cup?

Saturday February 14, 2009

A reader asks:

"My little girl is 6 months old. We just started her on cereal and fruits. She's mostly breast-fed, but when we give her a bottle, she holds it herself. We're wondering when we should start thinking about giving her a cup to drink out of and what we should be putting in the cup."

I have given her some advice here about how to introduce the cup and what types of cups to use. If you've already gone down this road, please leave a comment and share your experience.

I had a real hard time with my daughter and the sippy cup.She did not want to hold it.Then my friends baby was here and had a cup with handles and she got hold of that and drank away. Now all her cups have handles and its like she never had a problem.

My little girl, now 20 months, loves drinking from a cup — but we went through the sippy cup stage for a long time. I just waited until she began to experiment on her own (offering her a drink of my water) and slowly eased back on the sippy cups — more of her insistence than my desire to be done with them because it’s so nice to keep her hydrated throughout the day without having to keep an eagle eye on whether the contents will be spontaneously dumped to see what that “experiment” looks or feels like to my daughter. Good luck.

My daughter was the easiest child for sippy cups. I introduced one at 5 months and put a bit of formula in it at snack time. She transitioned from bottle to cup within a week.
She’s now on those sippy cups with the straw built in and we are transitioning her to regular cups without straws.
