I am fourteen, but I am a very educated and informes teen. Personally, I think that spanking a child is wrong and just goes to show a child that when something bad is done, then the only punishment is violence. It teaches them that, later on, if someone does something bad, then the only thing to do is hurt them with violence. Surely, if the child is bad enough to do something, then you can easily outsmart them and think of a new and better punichment that would make them think twice next time they went to do it.

(2) Monika Birk says:

Effective parenting does not have to include spanking. I don’t recall ever being spanked by my parents. If I was, it certainly did not leave a lasting impression! I spanked my son once, and I regretted it afterwards. My daughter has gone through to the age of 17 without ever being spanked. Now, I use reasoning with her and spend time discussing or debating. WHen she was a small child - communication was the focus - reasoning and discussing consequences when she was able to understand. Unfortunately both my children were in home day care because of my need to work, so I am not completely sure what went on during the days. Both children, however, have turned out to be responsible, effective, caring and considerate people. Using threats of physical abuse is definitely not the way to go. Whether a light “smack on the bottom” is acceptable, is still with the jury in cases concerning others. I prefer not.
