Potty Training: Underwear at Night and Will He Ever Tell Us When He Needs to Go?

Tuesday April 25, 2006
A reader has asked about some potty training issues with her son. He doesn't ever indicate that he needs to go, and I believe part of the problem is that he doesn't go on his own. He's taken and put on the potty to go and this has been their practice for nearly a year. She's also inquired about what her son should wear for night training -- underwear or a diaper?

I've given her my answer and shared what forum members have said about the subject, but if you have some helpful experience or advice to share, please leave a comment below.

My son is 3 1/2, and he is potty trained during the day. He still wear pullups only when he is going to bed. He wakes up dry most of the time, but there are nights that he doesn’t. He even wakes to go potty, a few times a week. So, he is almost there. He understands why he wears a pull-up. “Just in case”. I really feel that each child is different.

I would keep them in pull ups just for evening time-we called ours night time undies/pull ups. It would get too frustrating having to wash bedding all to often and the last thing the kid needs is to see frustration on you. Then once you are comfortable with nightitme you can start to remove those.

I have a 2 and three year old. They are both potty trained. I think pull ups confuse kids. I put my children in underwear and made them go to the potty every 15 minutes. After about a week, they realized the urge to go and would tell me when they had to go. We still had the occasional night time accident, but I cut off their drink time after supper and that has ended that problem.

My daughter is 3.2 yrs old. She has been day potty trained since she was 20 months. But, the night training doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. She wears pull ups only at night (not even for nap) & she wakes up just soaked. We take her to the bathroom at about 10:00 p.m. & she usually will pee for us, even though she is completely asleep. But, she will not get up herself to go to the washroom.
Any suggestions???
