Safe Co-sleeping

Saturday March 10, 2007
Despite advice from the American Academy of Pediatrics that the safest place for your baby is in an approved crib, many parents still believe strongly in the family bed. Those parents who practice co-sleeping on a daily basis are likely to know about and take the precautions to ensure their child's safety. But polls indicate that as many as 70 percent of all parents sleep with their children some or all of the time.

Parents who only occasionally take their infants to bed with them are less likely to know about some of the potential hazards. If you are a casual co-sleeper or have ever had your infant with you during the night or a nap, find out how to keep these times as safe as possible.

I’m all for the family bed! I’m a single mom and have shared my bed with my now 20 month old since day one! My baby still wakes up for nights feedings and its so easy to just lay there and nurse then fall back asleep.
When she was newborn I used rolled up recieving blankets to keep her in place; her preffered position was on her side, so this kept her from getting onto her tummy. I’m a light sleeper and would wake up to any movement from her. I’ve never had any fears or concerns about co-sleeping. I’ve followed along with “Dr.Sears!”
