Blinged-Out Pacifiers (Finally) Recalled Due to Aspiration Hazard
I've long been concerned about the trend of using those stick-on jewels to decorate pacifiers and pacifier clips. Even putting them on your keychains or cell phone isn't a good idea if there's the chance your child will ever get ahold of them. And really, how many of us can say that our babies have NEVER found our keys or cell phone and managed to get one in or near their mouths? I know every time I was ever at the store or the bank my son would grab my keys off the counter as I was writing a check or otherwise giving him less than 100 percent of my attention.
The problem here, however, is not in your child grabbing for something that normally would be off limits. Instead, it's about taking something that is created according to strict rules and regulations in order to keep your child safe and then turning it into something very dangerous. What's worse is that this risk is being taken in the name of fashion. So, I may be the first to go ga-ga over some of the over-the-top cutsie clothing and accessories emerging these days... and of course I've long been a fan of do-it-yourself toys and such. But in this case, I've got to say -- let's remember to use common sense when we're designing and modifying the stuff we give directly to our babies. Let's not be such slaves to fashion that we forget about safety. Remember, too, that these aren't the only accessories of this nature currently being sold. If you have anything with this type of modification, please stop using it now.
