Rotavirus and Child Care

Saturday January 5, 2008
Dale and Karen write, "How long do you need to keep your child out of daycare if he/she has rotavirus?"

State regulatory agencies have differing standards, but as long as your child has symptoms, it's best not to return to care in a group setting.

Learn more and find your state's guidelines or Find out more about what rotavirus is and how it's treated.

Rotavirus is the WORST, and any parent who would expose other kids to it (and therefore subject other parents to it) is evil and should be taken out and shot.

Seriously, rotavirus is really, really, really bad, and if there is any doubt at all, it is best to keep your kid home. Keep them home until the odor is gone (rotavirus has a very distinct smell, one that I will never forget). Once the odor goes, they’re no longer shedding virus.

My baby ended up in the ER because she was vomiting blood. She was sick for 10 days, maybe longer (and I was in my 3rd trimester of my second pregnancy at the time). It was the WORST.

We caught it at the doctor’s office, and it was almost enough to make me switch from our beloved family doctor to a pediatrician who has well and sick child areas that are separate…

Don’t mess with rotavirus.
