By Stephanie Brown, About.com

Definition: An au pair is someone who comes from another country to live with an American family in order to care for their child or children. Au pairs usually receive a small amount of money as well as room and board in exchange for their services. Most au pairs are restricted to part time hours and may or may not have experience working with young children.
