Question: When Should You Use Syrup of Ipecac for Poisoning?
Answer: According to a new policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the answer is never.
Formerly, it was recommended to keep a bottle of this substance on hand in order to induce vomiting in case of poisoning. Recent research, however, shows no benefit from this practice. In addition, the research shows that the medicine isn't always administered properly and that there is a growing trend towards abuse among those who are bulimic. The outcome of this abuse can lead to heart problems and is potentially deadly.
If not Syrup of Ipecac, then what should parents do if their child ingests a poisonous substance? Prevention is always the best measure, but if you find your child has swallowed something harmful, do not induce vomiting. Try to locate the poison and call Poison Control at (800) 222-1222 (nationwide in the United States) or your local emergency department for the number of a poison control center near you. If your child is having convulsions, is unconscious or not breathing, call 9-1-1 immediately. When you call, be prepared to tell what the substance is, how much was swallowed and the age and weight of your child.
