If homemade is your favorite, try one of these playdough recipes. Even if you've never tried making your own, give it a go. (The Kool-Aid recipe is a great starter recipe -- it smells so good and is super soft.) It's a little more work than store-bought playdough, but it's an inexpensive alternative and it's easy to keep on hand since you probably already have all the ingredients in your kitchen cabinets.
