Best Ride-On Toys for Toddlers and 2-Year-Olds

By

Ride-on toys are among the most popular toys for toddlers -- and for many good reasons. They keep active tots moving and jumping on things other than your furniture (so moms and kids love them). From a developmental point of view, they are a good choice because they help build gross motor skills.

Offering your tot a fun way travel at different stages of growth, the Kiddi-o is beloved by many kids. The big plus for this tricycle is that it grows with a child. Stating at around her first birthday, you can safely strap your child in and use the stroller bar to push your child around town. By age 2, your child may be able to pedal herself on the tricycle, and the adjustable seat will allow her to use the bike for another year or two.

A throw back to simpler days and an unplugged childhood, this ride-on is a great way to inspire your child's imagination through dramatic play. It has realistic features like a latch on the back and steering capabilities. The engine also boasts an eco-friendly design -- it's made from rubberwood; uses non-toxic paints, dyes, and lacquers; and is formaldehyde-free. The downside is that you will pay extra for the nostalgic and green features. But, again, this is a toy that will stand up for many years (and for multiple children).

6. Musical Thomas and Friends Bounce and Ride

If you have a train lover(specifically a Thomas the Tank Engine fan) on your gift list, this is an adorable gift idea. It's not like a traditional ride-on toy since kids don't actually move forward or backward. Instead, they can bounce lightly in place. There are fun sounds and music to entertain them on their imaginary ride. Just be aware, this is not a toy for large tots or very forceful and strong kids. It's a blow-up toy, so bouncing too hard or knocking it around too aggressively could cause it to spring a leak. Also, while it can be very fun for a while, this isn't a toy you should plan to pass on or have for years; in my experience, inflatable toys usually don't last more than a year or so.

Wow! I was shocked when I saw this battery-operated, toddler-friendly ATV-style trike. I was thinking about safety issues associated with ATVs. In reality, it should be perfectly safe for young children (with adult supervision). It is very cool and allows young children to feel independent as they steer and navigate a path on this super-hero ride. However, do consider the fact that toddlers need to burn up lots of energy. This toy doesn't do that. So you still need to give your little one a chance to run free and wild.

10. Step 2 Neighborhood Wagon

This is not exactly a ride-on toy...maybe more of a ride-in toy. Either way, a good traditional wagon is a smart choice for toddlers. Of course you have your stroller and your traditional ride-on toys, but wagons go places that the others don't -- the beach, for instance, is our wagon favorite spot. I also choose a a wagon for quick trips to the store and family outings like pumpkin picking. The Step 2 model has seat belts for safety, and is light but study so you can carry your toddler and a load of fresh veggies or sand toys.
