Paper Hanger's Paste

By Stephanie Brown, About.com

Here is a recipe you can use to make your own wallpaper paste at home. It's good for hanging borders or decals in the nursery or anywhere in the house.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup non-rising wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon alum
  • 1 tablespoon powdered rosin
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 4 1/2 cups hot water
  • 1 1/2 cups cold water
  • oil of cinnamon

Preparation:

Mix flour, alum and rosin in a pan.

Add the warm water and stir until the mixture is smooth.

Pour the hot water into the mixture and stir vigorously until well blended.

Heat over low heat until the mixture boils and the paste is thick and clear.

Remove from heat and thin the mixture with the cold water.

Optional: Use drops of the oil to add a pleasant smell and as a preservative if you are not using the mixture immediately.

Note: Powdered rosin can be purchased at most hobby stores or stores that sell sporting and dance supplies.
