Sunflower Seed Butter

By , About.com Guide

This sunflower seed butter can be a great alternative to peanut butter (or almond butter / cashew butter, etc.) if you're avoiding giving your toddler nuts due to the possibility of an allergic reaction.
Cook Time: 0:3
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup roasted sunflower seeds without shells
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
Preparation:

Put all ingredients in a blender or a food processor.

Blend until mixture is spreadable.

You may need to stop blending and scrape the sides occasionally.

If you would like to add a sweetener, add it about a teaspoon at a time until it's as sweet as you'd like. Some good sweeteners are honey (if your child is past 1 year of age), brown rice syrup, agave nectar or corn syrup. You may also be able to decrease the oil a bit if you use a liquid sweetener. If you use granulated sugar, you may need to increase the oil a bit.

Store the mix in the refrigerator.

If the oil and sunflower seed mix separates, stir before serving.
