Triaminic Vapor Patch Recalled

Wednesday June 28, 2006
Novartis Consumer Health has announced it is conducting a nationwide voluntary recall of all Vapor Patch product marketed under the Triaminic brand due to the serious adverse health effects that could result if the product is ingested by the child removing the patch and chewing on it.

Consumers who have Triaminic Vapor Patches should stop using them immediately. There have been multiple reported complaints received, including seizures.

All lots are being recalled in both product lines of mentholated cherry scent and menthol scent. Triaminic Vapor Patch contains camphor, eucalyptus oil and menthol.

The reported adverse events associated with swallowing products containing camphor or eucalyptus oils can vary from minor symptoms, such as burning sensation in the mouth, headache, nausea and vomiting, to more severe reactions, such as seizures.

The recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the FDA.

Triaminic Vapor Patch is labeled as a cough suppressant for children two (2) years of age and older. The directions on the label indicate the patch is to be applied to the throat or chest to allow the vapors to reach the nose and mouth. Multiple patches can be applied. Once applied, the patch would be within close reach for a child to remove and place in his/her mouth. The Vapor Patch is a topical cough product applied externally and not for oral consumption.

The product is sold nationwide over the counter at pharmacies and retail stores.

This recall affects only the Vapor Patch. Consumers should immediately discontinue use of this product and return it to their point of purchase for a full refund or discard it. Consumers requiring more information about this recall can contact Novartis Consumer and Professional Affairs Call Center at 1-800-452-0051 or visit www.triaminic.com.

I loved the Triaminic vapor patch. The product worked very well. Maybe the manufacturer should just change the age on the package to older children. My daughter is 6 and we never had a problem. I am sorry to see the product pulled. It worked great!!

(3) Plantwiz says:

Please bring these back. My 2 year old loved them and now that I’ve used the last one and cannot find them I discovered you have recalled them. Change the age to older kids and those of us with intelligent kids can determine if they can handle wearing the patch or not.

Bring them back….PLEASE!!!!!

(4) Theresa Janssen says:

My daughter, being a VERY picky kid, never liked ANY of the oral meds for a cold. The patch was our savior!! Now, I’m back to chasing her around the house and a two hour tantrum afterwards. PLEASE - for my sanity - BRING IT BACK!!!

(5) Anne Kochell says:

I loved the vapor patches. They have been an effective way for my children to get relief of their cough especially at night. Just found out about the recall this evening. Novartis should try to get FDA approval for an older age group and/or put strong restrictions on the box for parents. Discovering this news this evening is very disappointing.

(6) Michele Romano says:

This was really the best thing ever for children who refuse to take cold medications orally. I hope you all find a way to bring these patches back, they worked very, very well.

I am very sorry to see this item being recalled. It worked great for my daughter and I never had any problems with her trying to take them off. She’s used them ever since she was able. Even she is mad they aren’t available anymore (and she’s only 5). I would love to see these come back.

Please increase the age on the patches. I use them for myself and my 12 & 9 yr. old. They give better relief than any other product. We just used our last one and are desperate.

(15) Carol Pace says:

The recall is absolutely rediculous. Maybe we should just recall everything that is harmful for our children to injest. How about all pajamas. what if those kids took off their pajamas at night and tried to eat those. I agree with all the other comments made. I use these patches myself when I have a cold, so does my mom, my sister and my mother in law. My kids have used these since they were under two (with adult supervision). They have never thought about eating the patch because I told them not to. Of course the patch is harmful if it is eaten. It is like eating a bandaid. Maybe they should quit making bandaids, small children can easily take those off too. Triaminic should counter sue for being absolutely stupid. Pleas bring back the patch for older age children and adults. Thank you. Carol.

(16) Lee Anne Baker says:

My 7 year old is sick for the first time this winter i call my husband and ask him to pick up some vapor patches for him because he was able to breath and sleep better through the cold period. After hubby running to 3 different drug stores we find out they are recalled. I am a registered nurse and i can tell you that i used them myself and they worked really well.I am so disappointed that these were recalled. Everytime i go to rite aid and get a prescription i sign a paper that i was counseled on the medication or that i declined to be counseled. What would be the problem with signing a release to buy them. Then you are fully responsible of all the consequences that may occur. These were very helpful to age appropriate children and adults. My seven year old knows better than to eat the patch or bother it for any reason while it’s on.I put it on and I monitor it..How sad for these companies that get these law suits put against them for a product that was to put out there to help children.

(17) Brigid Thomas says:

I just recently (05/25/07) discovered that the patch was recalled. We live on these patches… I buy them in bulk and just discovered that we were out of them. I went to 4 stores and had the pharmacist call to see if he could locate them. I had NO IDEA that they had been recalled. I understand the issue for youger childeren but For those older (the non eating of noneatible things) and the adults that use them they are so missed. We depended on these patches to get us through the night, without taking meds through the night. Please bring these back for the big people!!!!

(18) Cheri says:

My children loved the patches. They were pretty sticky and I wouldn’t see most children pulling them off to eat them. I think better instructions and marketing to older kids would be great. My kids hate taking oral medicine and we loved the patches!! I know I’ve used one on myself a time or two. I really hate to see them go.

(19) Yesenia says:

My children loved the patches.I myself loved the patches, my nine year old and my 4 year old would tell me to put them on when they had bad coughs. Please bring them back!!

(20) Tonda says:

Two nights ago we used our last Triaminic Vapor Patch. My nine year old daughter asked her daddy to go to the store and buy some more. After going to four stores, he gave up trying to find them. Our daughter was so disappointed. She hates taking oral medication and she loved the vapor patch. They worked wonderfully! We have a fifteen year old who also liked the vapor patch. I did a search on the internet to only find out that the vapor patch has been RECALLED!!! Now we have to return to the MESSY method of rubbing Vick’s vapor rub on her chest and trying to figure out how to securely wrap cloth around the throat and chest so that it will stay thru the night. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE bring these patches back!! I agree with others…Change the age to older kids and those of us with intelligent kids can determine if they can handle wearing the patch or not. Those with children who CAN NOT keep things out of their mouths should not have even considered using the patch! Discovering this news today is very disappointing. Is there anything that has replaced these little wonder patches?

(21) Kat mother of 5 says:

I can’t believe that these were recalled!! I have used these on all 5 of my girls’ since they were 1yr old. They have never once removed it or even put it near their mouth. Then again, I have always told them that it was medicine and they were always instructed DO NOT TOUCH. They were the only thing to work. Now, my 6yr old is in desperate need of them and they are no longer available! I’m sure because some parent went ape because their child touched it and put it in their mouth, or something to that affect. The manufacturers should definitely change the age. And parents should use them with caution. If a parent knows their child tends to put things in their mouth, then dahhh, don’t use them!! As for myself, my dauthers’ use them because they are the only thing that work for them. PLEASE BRING THEM BACK!!!!!
