Readers Respond: What Words Did You Use with Your Toddler During Potty Training?

Responses: 8

From , former About.com Guide

Some parents want their children to say they are having a bowel movement while others encourage their children to say they're going poop. You say penis, I say wiener. What words did you decide to use? Were these words that your own parents used with you or did you decide to go a different way? Share the words you used with your toddler while potty training.

Words to Use

My 22-month-old son is potty trained. He says poo poo and wee wee when he wants to go. He calls his privates tom tom :)

Toilet or Restroom

I usually use toilet but sometime restroom is best.

My daughter named them herself

My daughter calls the toilet the "poopy" and the flush handle the "bye bye." We didn't teach her that, but it works. ;)

what words to use?

My son is 22 months old and not potty trained yet but we normally use the word peepee and caca for poop because we are Hispanic and he seems to get it.

No. 1 or No. 2?

It took awhile for me as child to catch on what was No. 1 or No. 2. I was always confusing them although it didn't seem to make a difference. It all happened in the same place anyway.

US/UK

My son hasn't started potty training yet but because we live in Britain (I am American though, my husband is British), we're going to use the British terms that adults also use! Poo (I've done a poo), Wee (I need to wee), and willy! :)

What Words Did You Use?

My 2 year old daughter is in the potty training process. I guess from when she was a baby hearing us ask, "Are you stinky?" she has picked that up. When she needs to go poop she says, "I go stinky!"

Kid words

We didn't use the formal words until my kids were older and had started school. When they were potty training it was pee pee and poo poo. We called the body areas their "privates."
